The Workers’ Museum

At the Workers’ Museum, the Danish worker takes center stage. Through immersive exhibitions, you’ll step into the past, where the scent of frying food, kerosene, and coal almost lingers in the air. Discover the story of Copenhagen’s workers—their lives, culture, and working conditions—over the past 150 years.

The Workers’ Museum offers an in-depth look at family life, labor conditions, social life, and leisure in Denmark’s working class.

In the exhibition We Are the Workers, you’ll step into the harsh realities of life around the year 1900. Visit the damp and cramped maid’s quarters or the family’s tiny attic apartment. Meet workers who struggled daily just to put food on the table. This is the story of how people who had little on their own became the driving force behind the creation of the Danish welfare state.

You can also experience 150 years of industrial work in the Industry exhibition, where you’ll sense the atmosphere of old factory floors. Get close to Carlsberg’s 19th-century backyard bottlers or the riveting crews at B&W shipyards in the 1950s.

The Workers’ First Assembly Hall

The museum building itself, located in Rømersgade, was originally the Workers’ Assembly Hall, built in 1879—the first house constructed and paid for by the Danish labor movement. It served as a social and political meeting place where workers gathered for celebrations, debates, and activism.

Now a listed historic building, it houses the Grand Assembly Hall, a beautifully preserved space that has hosted countless events since 1879—from political meetings to Christmas parties and theater performances. Over the years, the hall has welcomed influential speakers, including Lenin and Rosa Luxemburg, and it continues to be a venue for political and cultural gatherings today.

Get a glimpse into your great-grandmother's daily life

The Workers’ Museum offers engaging experiences for both children and adults, making it an ideal destination for education as well.

In The Children’s Workers’ Museum, kids can step into the life of a working-class child in the 1930s. They can take a job at the brewery, work as a bicycle messenger, or help out in the trade union office. At the old-fashioned grocery store, they can play freely with goods, scales, and change—everything is hands-on at the Children’s Workers’ Museum.

Here, visitors can also get a glimpse of great-grandmother’s daily life, taking a nostalgic journey back to a time when the stove burned real fire—long before refrigerators and blenders became household essentials.

Café & Øl-Halle 1892

At the museum’s Café & Øl-Halle 1892, you can truly savor history. This is Copenhagen’s only listed basement restaurant, carefully restored to its original 1892 appearance. Here, you can enjoy traditional Danish dishes, beer, and schnapps—just as they were served back in the day.

A visit to the museum is best rounded off with a taste of the past!
