St Laurentius
Beneath Stændertorvet, in the heart of Roskilde, lie the ruins of a medieval church. Here, you can venture underground and get up close to nearly 900 years of history.
Beneath the town
Two metres beneath Stændertorvet, you step into the remains of St Lawrence’s Church and medieval Roskilde. Discover the original brick floor, the church’s floor plan and traces of the people who lived and went about their lives in the town many hundreds of years ago. Here, you’ll learn about the history of the church, the saint Saint Laurentius, and the medieval town that once surrounded it.
Up the tower
From the darkness of the church ruins, the tour takes you up the narrow spiral staircase in the old church tower. Over the years, the tower has served as a prison, a town hall tower and a lookout post for the town’s night watchmen. On the way, you can see the old prison cells and the night watchmen’s quarters before reaching the top and the view over Roskilde.
900 years in 10 minutes
If you’d like to learn a bit about the history before setting off to explore, you can take part in a short introduction to the church ruins and the tower. In just 10 minutes, you’ll hear the most important stories about the site. Afterwards, you can explore for yourself beneath the market square and high above the town.
