Roskilde Museum is the city’s museum. A museum about Roskilde and the people who have shaped the city, lived in it and left their mark on it. Here, the story is told of one of Denmark’s most important medieval cities and the surrounding area, from ancient times right up to the present day.
Roskilde has never stood still. The city has been a centre for kings, the church, trade and power. It was here that the Danish kingdom was united, and from here, over the centuries, people have set the course for both the city and the country. Archaeological finds, historical artefacts and personal accounts bring these traces to life and bring the past closer to us.
But history is not just about what once was. It is also about what we are part of now. For the city itself is the museum’s most important exhibit. Together, the streets, buildings, squares and people tell the story of Roskilde – a story that is constantly being written.
