Roskilde Cathedral Museum
High above the rooftops of Roskilde, the Cathedral Museum is situated at the heart of Roskilde Cathedral. Here, you can experience 1,000 years of history up close from the first wooden church to the impressive medieval cathedral, which is now a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
1,000 Years of History
Explore the cathedral’s history through medieval wooden figures, stained-glass windows, funerary objects and historical artefacts from the church. Among other things, see a reconstruction of Queen Margrete I’s golden gown and the first printed edition of Saxo Grammaticus’ History of Denmark.
The Church of the Kings
Roskilde Cathedral has been closely linked to the Danish monarchy for centuries and serves as the burial place for a long line of Danish kings and queens. At the museum, you can gain a deeper insight into the people, events and religious changes that have shaped both the cathedral and Denmark.
History from Above
The Cathedral Museum is situated in the Chapel of the Three Kings, the upper floor of which is also known as the Knights’ Hall. Here, you can experience history in the very same rooms where a knightly order was based in the 15th century, whilst taking in views of the cathedral’s impressive architecture and the traces of centuries past.
