Mothsgården

At Mothsgården, by the street pond in Søllerød, you can experience exhibitions about the history of the Rudersdal region and enjoy a cup of coffee in a beautiful, historic setting and green surroundings.

Denmark’s first dictionary and the oldest country house
Mothsgården is Denmark’s oldest preserved country house. At the end of the 17th century, it was the summer residence of Privy Councilor and linguist Matthias Moth (1649-1719). He was a top official under Christian V and began collecting material for his large dictionary of the Danish language around 1686. At his death, he left behind 62 handwritten volumes that make up the dictionary. You can see one of them, and Moth’s neat handwriting, up close at Mothsgården.

History and excursions in the garden
Mothsgården has changing exhibitions about the history of the Rudersdal region in the beautiful listed buildings. Mothsgården is located by the street pond in Søllerød right next to Søllerød Kro and is a good starting point for a hike in Kirkeskoven, along Søllerød Lake or around one of Denmark’s most beautiful cemeteries, Søllerød Church.

In Mothsgården’s museum shop you can buy coffee, cake and ice cream, which can be enjoyed in the museum garden or in the kitchen, which has been restored to how it looked in 1917.
