Medical Museion

Exploring, understanding and mastering the body has always been the task of medicine. Medical Museion tells the story of the importance of medicine in our lives – past, present and future. It is a museum for all of us who have a body and are curious about how it has been understood and treated – from antiquity to genetics.

Medical Museion is a must-see for anyone curious about the body, illness, and health. Situated in the former Royal Surgical Academy from 1787, it offers a fascinating look into how the body has been understood and treated throughout history.

Explore the human body, get up close to living bacteria, and learn about the most important medical discoveries and technological inventions. The exhibitions at Medical Museion are based on its extensive collection, with a focus on both historical insights and current research. Journey through the history of illness and health, from antiquity to genetics.

The Royal Danish Academy of Surgery
Medical Museion is housed in the former Royal Surgical Academy, the Kirurgiske Akademi, founded in 1787. In the original auditorium, generations of medical students have studied the anatomy of the body. Today, this historic space continues to host events, teaching sessions, artistic performances, and musical concerts.

An Award-Winning University Museum
Part of the University of Copenhagen, Medical Museion is not only a museum for the public but also a research department specializing in research communication. The museum has received several awards for its innovative exhibitions, including the Bikuben Foundation’s Vision Exhibition Award in 2015. In 2019, it was nominated for the prestigious UMAC Award by ICOM.

Face to face with the human body

In the exhibition The Collected Human, you can get up close to skeletons, organs, cells and DNA. The exhibition shows how the body has been collected and used as raw material for medical science throughout history – from historical collections of bones and bodies on glass to today’s collected humans in biobank freezers.

Thought-provoking connections between the brain and stomach

Our brain and bowels are under examination in the exhibition Mind the Gut. Through a thought-provoking blend of science, art and history, the exhibition explores the complex connections between our mind and our guts. Brain, gut feelings, identity, bowels, bacteria, microbiomes – all interlinked.
