Lejre Museum
Delve into the history of one of Denmark’s most important centres of power during the Iron Age and the Viking Age.
Here, in the heart of the historic landscape surrounding Gl. Lejre, stood a royal seat where noblemen and kings left their mark over more than 500 years. Today, legends, archaeological finds and historic landscapes come together at the museum.
Lejre is the place where tales of legendary kings such as Rolf Krake, Frode Fredegod and Harald Hildetand coexist with the archaeological traces of a real past. The finds tell of grand halls, power, rituals and the people who lived in the area over a thousand years ago. Among the museum’s treasures are the famous Odin figurine, the Mannerup hoard and a host of other finds that help paint a picture of Lejre as one of the Viking Age’s key centres of power.
Right on the museum’s doorstep lies the landscape where history unfolded. Here, you can walk amongst the remains of the ancient royal halls, explore the great ship burial site and follow walking trails through a landscape that still holds stories of the people of the past and their world.
Lejre Museum is the place where legend is set against archaeology, and where history can be experienced both in the display cases and out in the countryside. Get up close to the finds, explore the stories and discover a place where some of the tales of the beginnings of the Danish kingdom can still be felt.
